This town in the South West region of Western Australia is located 212 km south of Perth and off the highway midway between Bunbury and Busselton.
Frederick Ludlow discovered the Capel River in 1834, but it remained without a name until the Busselton family came to the area. Soon after, the family was followed by several settlers. It was named after Capel Carter Brockman, daughter of John Bussell.
Capel, located on the Capel River, was formerly a farming area, dealing mainly in agricultural products such as dairy and beef. Up to this day, agriculture remains an important part of the area’s economy. Capel is known for hobby farms, which function more as recreational lands or country homes more than profitable working farms. This attracts people who are looking for a relaxed lifestyle or those who prefer non-urban lifestyles like beach or nature living.
Locals are pursuing different novel agricultural activities including viticulture (grape growing), raising of alpaca, aquaculture (or aquafarming) and blue gum production.
Aside from agricultural, mineral sands mining and tourism are also important parts of Capel’s economy.
Capel features 29 km of pristine beaches. It is a veritable playground for watersports, including swimming, fishing, boating, surfing and scuba diving. You can access the beach for your boat at Forest, Peppermint Grove, Minninup and Dalyellup beaches.
Capel is near Margaret River, Augusta and Pemberton regions where vineyards and wineries are aplenty. Capel Vale is one of the most popular vineyards and wineries in the region, featuring a restaurant and a beautiful venue for various events like weddings.
Capel has one primary school and and a tertiary school, South West John Calvin Christian College. There are also a number of daycare facilities for toddlers and preschool children.
Schools, retail shops, specialty stores, food outlets and cafes are within walking distance.
There is no problem with traffic in Capel. And home buyers or investors can still find big blocks of properties.
